Three men—Serge, Fourbieux, and Kopetsky—escape from a penitentiary. Kopetsky is injured during the escape. While Serge goes to Eva, Kopetsky’s former lover, to ask her for the 300,000 francs needed for their departure, Fourbieux, driving a stolen truck, heads to a man named César, a specialist in forged documents. The small boat that is to carry the three men to their final freedom is set to sail twelve hours later.
